View Full Version : Resurrect A Musician/Band
If you could could resurrect a musician or a band, who would it be and why?
I would pick Jimi Hendrix because he was one badass brother, and I would of loved to see him play live, especially at Woodstock 69.
Second would be the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band.... they are underrated.
Hendrix sucked balls. Wow a bluses scale with feedback and whammy bar masturbation. Almost as impressive as Kirk Hammet and his bluses scale, wah pedal combination of greatness.
You are over looking some importent facts. No one had ever done what he had done at that time. Sure hes not too innovated NOW, but back in the day he was the master. He wrote the new Malleos Maleficarum (I probably butchered that word) on guitar. Realize what he did in that era and what everyone else was doing. Without him, we certainly wouldn't be this far along in guitar.
I'll be the first to say Metallica. They're not literally dead, but its safe to say that a good part of them has died inside of them

I've tried to explain that to stupid 14 year old kids who say "he was sloppy!!11" or "hes not ass goud ass chuk schuldinnnner". They don't get it. He was an innovator. Of course he doesn't sound so impressive compared to some of the guys we have today. He sped up the process, he innovated, and that's infinitely more important than being able to play generic technical death. That says a lot from me when you consider I'm a huge fan of technical death. Those same 14 and 15 year old kids trying to argue with me about that were all tech buffs who don't seem to realize that emotion and atmosphere are equally as important and technicality, and that innovation is far more important. I'd like to see how many of those kids can play Cryptopsy with their guitar on fire.
As far as who I would resurrect, it's hard to say, but I think it would be Chuck Shuldiner because he really should have had a lot of good years ahead of him. There are other guys who died that I liked as much as Chuck, but they were all older (like Baloff and others).
Jimi was the man. I'd still ressurrect Mr Schuldiner though. He was basically the Jesus (No offence, Chuck, I mean that in the nicest possible way) of death metal (Hmm...hold on, didn't Jesus apparently come back from the dead?).
Probably Cliff Burton. Just because I dig his bass playing. Paul Baloff would be cool too.

thats actually a very agreeable comment. And i bet most people could agree that they have in fact died now, on some levels.
Id bring back Chuck S. he did good, and i think he was only getting better. I know it hasnt been long, but I also know hed still be at it with the great shit flowing out left and right.

Have to say not a big fan of Jimi, but I agree 100% with what he has done for us. Metallica, unforunately, they have let that spark that made them, them die. So it would be nice to see that back. As for what band I'd like to resurect, it'd have to be Guns N Roses (real GNR), I would have loved to see them play, or Carcass that'd be cool...
definetly Rhoads!
Indeed, good choice. Alot of people mentioned Chuck Shuldiner, I haven't heard any of his stuff, but maybe I should. Was he a solo artist or in a band?

I'm pretty sure he was the drummer for Death
AHHHHHH!  You don't know who Chuck is? seriously, that is not cool. Anyway, he wasn't the drummer, he was the singer/guitarist of that band, Death. A true fuckin genius.
Shit, I can't believe I didn't think of Rhoads! I'd pick Schuldiner still, but only because of my tastes.

Not necessarily resurrect, but cure Jason Becker of ALS not only for my personal enjoyment, but also his. It is just such a sad thing to see him, out of anybody get such a horrible disease. I would like to see how he progresses, and what he does with it. I'm 100% positive that if he had never gotten the disease, almost every guitar player would have heard of him by now, and he would be doing even more amazing things that he had already been doing.
Of course Chuck Shuldiner as well. It is just so wierd that guitarists that had such potential, and were so great get diseases (or tumors). Out of anybody it had to be the greats, I just don't understand. He had such killer riffs.

I'd like to resurrect Garr Samuelson...on a different note, I'd also like to resurrect a Megadeth with Kerry King on guitars (even though he only played something like three show with them) and Metallica with Dave Mustaine on guitars...I know the personalites within those line-ups would cause an eventual implosion of the group, but I've always wondered what those bands would sound like a few years down the line.

Yes!! Dani Gatton....that guy was a genuis, i dont remember how he died though, i think he commited suicide because of a disease in his hands that made him unable to play guitar.

Metallica with Mustaine and there is no Megadeth. Megadeth with King and there is no Slayer. Kerry was no fit for Megadeth anyway, Poland's solos alone beat the shit out of everything Kerry has every written, even entire songs.
On the same note, I really don't think Metallica would have progressed as much as a band had Mustaine stayed, and I really think getting kicked out of Metallica lit a fire under Dave's ass that caused him to drive himself further than he would have went otherwise. There's no way of really knowing this, but I've always felt Dave forced Megadeth to be better than Metallica just to show them up and make them look stupid for kicking him out. If it weren't for that I doubt he'd have been as good. Just my opinion, though.
EDIT: Do you ever wonder what Megadeth would have been like if Dave never had to kick Poland out in the first place? Gar never would have left if Poland wasn't kicked out. For that matter, it begs the question of what Megadeth would have been like if there never were any drugs involved. No drugs means Poland never steals the equipment and hawks it for drug money. That means he never gets kicked out. You can only wonder about things that never happened, though. It'd be nice if there were a crystal ball to see into parellel universes!
listen up, all of you people that are shitting on Kurt Cobain's good name.
ill be the first to admit he wasnt much of a guitarist. at all. he sucked. and he wasnt an amazing singer. but what he did with what he had was amazing. he may not have had an incredible amount of skill with a guitar, but he was an amazing writer. and his singing wasnt great, but the way he used his voice drew forth every ounce of emotion he had. his lyrics were the best EVER, nothing else to it. Kurt didnt revolutionize anything, he didnt set any new standards for guitarists, he didnt shred. but everything he did was 100% his own style and emotional, and what he had he used to the fullest. i would take Kurt Cobain over Yngwie Malmsteen anyday. i would call Kurt Cobain as the greatest lyricist of all time. not the greatest singer, but by far the greatest lyricist.

Kurt was not a great lyricist. Doll steak, test meat? What the fuck is that? Some of his words were nice, the lyrics to SOME songs. Good lyrics he wrote (Very Ape, Swap Meet, etc.) were easily matched in number by shitty or nonsensical ones (On a Plain, Hairspray Queen, etc.). Kurt Cobain isn't worth resurrecting because he was a loser and he'd just get high every day for like six months before killing himself AGAIN. What's the point? By the way, I'm a Nirvana fan. No, seriously.
Alice in Chains had some great lyrics, a lot of interesting hidden meanings. I'd say Layne Staley might deserve resurrection just based on talent, but the exact same thing I said about Kurt Cobain applies to Layne, the only difference being Layne would be more likely to kill himself unintentionally. For that matter, Kurt would be very likely either way. I guess that's why I chose Chuck, just because he seemed like such a great guy, with ability to boot, and his demise wasn't self-inflicted. He seemed like he should have had a lot of great years ahead, something I can say for neither Kurt Cobain or Layne Staley.

while i do agree, i believe the good lyrics far outweighed the bad. maybe i went too far in saying he was the best, but i do stand firm that he was one of the best. my thoughts on Layne Staley are incredibly similar to Kurt Cobain

I'm sorry but I cannot agree with you here. I would take Yngwie Malmsteen over Kurt Cobain any day because he has skill, and I don't care how "into" the music Kurt Cobain was he is still way overrated. Some of his songs are kind of catchy, but there are a lot of punk songs that are catchy and take more talent. I used to listen to rap. Actually I have only been listening to metal for the past 3 or 4 years, and the biggest reason I got into metal was because my friend would let me listen to Arch Enemy and Children Of Bodom songs and I was blown away by the sounds they could make from their guitars and the skill it took. Rap takes no skill at all, they don't even make the beats up, they are all computer generated. The only thing they do is make up words that rhyme, and hell, when your talking in ebonics to where you change the sound of every word that just makes it even easier. Thats why I give Kurt Cobain no respect. I respect those who are talented, not those who want to be.
i absolutely do not agree, but thats totally cool. its your opinion. my only question is, what the fuck did the rap thing have to do with that?
lol at the quote in ur sig

Dude I'm a crazy cunt, remember? :p I guess it was just there to help me get my point accross about music that takes skill and music that doesn't and why I have respect for the stuff that does, and the stuff that doesn't. It's there to help you see where I am coming from I guess, because I mean everyone is different, and especially since you have a different view than me (which is cool) but I figured it would be a little harder for you to understand my view without stating where I come from and what my beliefs are about good musicians.

I was perfectly aware of all of that...it was just me sharing my contradictory, fever induced thoughts with everyone. I was under the impression, however, that Gar was kicked out on the grounds that he wanted a bigger paycheck (obviously so that he could have feed his addiction) but since Mustaine was the only credited songwriter at the time he wouldn't let it happen...but then again, I heard that from VH-1's Megadeth Behind the Music... But, if Poland was never kicked out, we wouldn't have gotten the song "Liar". :D Plus, you never know how RIP might have come out w/o Menza and Friedman. Or I could say that it would have been interesting to see how SFSGSW came out with Gar and Poland on board.
Back on topic...
If I could resurect a band, I would bring back Possessed, just because I figure if they would get back together, some label would take notice and reprint Seven Churches, that way I could replace my busted piece of shit cassette...maybe I would go see them live if they did that.

AND WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BRETT HOFFMAN FROM MALEVOLENT CREATION? was his drug problem that bad that he hasnt been heard from since late 92/early 93????

If there where never any drugs in Megadeath, would Mustaine have been kicked out of Metallica?
Mustaine got kicked out because he was a violent drunk, not because of (illegal) drugs. Everybody were drunks in Metallica, but I suppose they were goofy drunks, and Dave was not. His being kicked out is tied mostly to a single incident where he knocked the shit out of Hetfield and threw Burton around. He doesn't look that big, but apparently he's an excellent fighter (some sort of black belt in Karate, I believe). 1 Black Belt + 4 other guys + too much alcohol = black eyes and bodies all over the place.
Credit to Dementia
2004-10-01, 23:17
Mustaine has the kickboxing skills, and was an unfunny, mean drunk surrounded by three guys who'd get drunk and become silly. That couldn't have lasted. Though I agree to some extent with Chris's statement that getting kicked out lit the fire under his ass, I also figure he'd have gone creatively stifled with James and Lars. There doesn't really seem to be room in early Metallica for another perfectionist, especially considering the drastic difference between Hetfield's and Mustaine's riffs.

Mustaine got into a fight with Hetfield beacuse James referred to Dave's dogs as "fucking" and Dave pissed about it. So he got in a fight with James at Ron McGovney's house. He knocked James down with one punch and threw Ron through a coffee table.

You also must take into account that the guys in Metallica cannot fight and they are weak. Anyone of us could take them all on. For one thing, Hetfield is a very small fry now. Hell, they even said it themselves in an interview I saw.

Hetfield's proficient in firearms. He's a bigtime hunter. So much so that I can't hear 'Countdown to Extinction' without thinking it's a dig at him. I've spent enough time in backwoods areas to find out that it's not a good idea to fuck about with someone who has a shotgun at home and knows how to handle it like a surgeon. You never know when something innocuous is going to push him over the edge. But I'll take that into account and keep it in mind in case I ever need to kick the shit out of someone from Metallica.
And Bonzo was great, but Zeppelin had their run. You couldn't ask for a better run than Zeppelin had. Well, you could, but you wouldn't get it, because no one will ever have a better run. If they'd gone on long enough, even they'd have lost their spark, and I'm glad we have something like a death to blame it on, rather than what's done it to the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith.
And finally, I'm going to be unpopular and say no to Cliff Burton. I have a bootleg of his final show, and it's a good show to go out on; better than I'll get. Plus they never would have made ...And Justice For All. Sure they went downhill immediately afterward, but I still think it's superior to whatever they may have made had he lived, since they wouldn't have the anger regarding his death and the belated dedication to his classicism.
All that said, I have to go with Randy Rhoads. He was just starting out when he died, and if you compare Diary of a Madman to Blizzard of Ozz - and compare that to some of the available work he did with Quiet Riot - you might notice he was getting better. What he might have done is almost inconceivable. Maybe he gave us all a break by dieing so early. Aside from that, I like Mr. sane's picks and would want to see Zappa's 'Look at me! I'm Alive!' concert.
And shame on Mr. Stoner for spelling 'death' correctly when he was writing Megadeth.

No, you got it right.

No big deal to me. Obviously I wouldn't beat the shit out of Hetfield, although what he has done disgusts me. If I ever did for some reason, I wouldn't really be worried. People can kill people with anything. I have a hatchet, knives, utility razors, hammers, ropes, etc. Obviously not as profiecient as a gun, but the point is people can kill other people with anything, and the fact that somebody owns a couple of hunting rifles doesn't really scare me.
I'd also like to mention that hunting can be very beneficial to small ecosystems, even though the morality of hunting hasn't really been brought up. Naturally, I am strongly opposed to the hunting of anything that is not overly abundant. If you live in Florida, buy a rifle, buy a shotgun, buy a handgun and shoot as many wild hogs as you can.

It wouldn't be too big a deal to me, and wasn't, until I went to northern Idaho. I ended up on the wrong end of strategically placed rifles - some of them illegal - a few too many times over some really, really innocuous shit not to be at least mildly uncomfortable around someone who knows how to handle them. I also grew up in a place where people would shoot at you for trespassing; it was always a warning shot and really happened only when it was clear we were going to vandalize something, but neither of them make you feel any better about being shot at by someone you can't see.
But yeah, I'm aware of the fact that I can kill with some of the everyday items around me. I don't have any weapons, per se, as I'm not really living somewhere I could keep or use them, but I've got a corkscrew, and you can definitely kill somebody with a corkscrew. Just not when they've got an elephant gun pointed at you.
old dissection line up with john zwetsloot on guitar would be quite cool

@Dementia, haha yeah. I think I only brought that up because I had always gotten the impression he was a huge mother fucker with bicepts and chest. Well, now that I've seen him compared to other people, he's like 5ft 10 and very skinny. :rolleyes:And that damn cap he wears is annoying....
back to topic....I'd like to see Layne Staley alive again.

Oh i see, sorry for my incorrect assumption then.
And I apologise to all who i offended by mispelling Megadeth. :bawling:

I may be wrong, but i believe he was the rhythm guitarist for Dissection.
The rhythm guitarist for Dissection that ratted Jon Notvedit in for killing someone.
