View Full Version : 5 Favorite guitarist
Metallica Man

James Hetfield-MetallicA
Kirk Hammett-MetallicA
Dave Mustaine-Megadeth
Dimebag Darrel-Pantera
Slash-Guns'n'roses:homer:
Jeff Hanneman
Trey Azagthot (his name's a big tricky)
Chuck Shuldiner
Pat O'Brian
And last, but certainly not least, Dave Suzuki. That man is fucking brilliant. (probably the most talented of the 5 i've chosen)
If someone disagrees, i highly recommend listening to Vital Remains. Suzuki is a drummer, but he writes and play all the solos....ALL of them. He also does effects, plays classical solos when needed, synth, and a few other instruments.

anyone can compare him or herself to max cavalera, you only have to play two chords for five minutes. don't take this the wrong way, but I never trust people who say they're great at something. there's always someone better. ;) but peace, dog.

to be a great guitarist is not just too play very well.. you also need too´come up with some good stuff (like cavalera.. he makes some tightass riffs).....:stoned:

hey, I grew up on sepultura. but max is not one of the best guitarists you've ever heard. but he's a cool mofo, I'll give him that. and of course, putting six hundred notes in one song doesn't make you a good musician, even though you can be considered a good guitarplayer. ah, fuck it. let's grab some beer and some hot women.

yup, never heard of him. but i still think buckethead is one of the
best guitarists in the world. there is a book somewhere out there
that he wrote, its a music theory book, and its insane, there aren't many
people who can even understand it.
the only reason he isn't famous is because on all of his albums, he mixes
metal with funk, which is a crappy combination i think.

In no particular order... well..cept Jason Becker, he's my current Idol
1) Jason Becker
2) Alexi Laiho
3) Michael Angelo
4) Randy Rhoads
5) i guess Yngwie Malmsteen
and I know who Andres Segovia is.. I'm currently trying to learn Malaguena, but right now i'm trying to practice on my flamenco skills so i can play the triplets.
Jason Becker mixes melody with shred unlike any other guitar player i have ever heard.
Alexi Laiho is just an all around great guitarrist and I love his style.
Michael Angel is fuckin nuts on the guitar.. fast as hell and he has that weird way of playing guitar with his wrist over the neck instead of under.. it's cool..
Randy Rhoads is a great neo-classical/shred guitarrist and his chord progressions are great.
Yngwie Malmsteen is just fast.. He does use some neo-classical stuff, but it's ALL in harmonic minor, just different keys.. It's interesting though that his technical skill is extreme..
Kjeldgor
2003-04-24, 10:37
Oh.. and one more thing.. Jason Becker has top notch fingerpicking skills which, IMO, puts him ahead of everyone else simply because he can play more than just with a pick..
Yngwie can also fingerpick, but I wouldn't think he can fingerpick as well as Jason Becker.. He does have a flamenco song out.. but I think nailing the bass notes and melody line together is more difficult..
But people have their own opinions.

Ok I forgot if I posted before and I can't be bothered to look..way to lazy.
In no real order here is my top five.
• Mark Sawickis (Impetigo)
He had extreemly simple riffs that sawed back and forth. Repeated numerous times and solos nothing more than trem bar butchery. But his riffs (although simple) where some of the greatest I've heard. Like the opening riff of I Work For The Streetcleaner or Defiling The Grave gave off the creepy/cheesy feel you would get from watching old horror films. Where most bands these days who sing about horror films try and be as technical as fuck they don't try and get into characters or atmosphere that represent the topics they are singing about but Impetigo's music fit the topics they were singing about. When I listen to Defiling The Grave I can picture ghouls stalking through the graveyard and tearing open tombs to feast on dead flesh. When I listen to the slow, doomy Breakfest At The Manchestor Morgue I can picture zombies rising from crypts. Zombies are slow, the song is slow so it fits. Hell even in the song Cannibal Ballet they had tribal drumming representing that of a cannibal jungle cult preforming a sacrifice. IMPETIGO IS MY FAVOURITE BAND!
•Martin Schirenc (Pungent Stench)
He has some of the most creepy/heavy riffs I've heard on For God Your Soul...For Me Your Flesh. Yet he also can throw song funky solos and guitar work out like on Sick, Bizare, Defaced Creation or Viva La Muerte!
•Eric Cutler (Autopsy)
He can create some of the creepiest feelings with his guitar riffs. His doomy and errie chops are virtually unmached by anyone in Death Metal these days (and I'm not talking technicality here. I'm talking atmosphere)
•Sean McGrath (Impaled)
His style can be analyzed as one part Bill Steer (Carcass) and one party Pat O Brein (Cannibal Corpse). He has some catchy, melodic feelings like Bill in his sound but he plays all over the neck like Pat. Seriously the tab for Dead Inside is insane. Plus the fact that he sings while doing it is also amazing. I think what gets me the most is his solos. Where most guys try and play a billion notes in a solo he makes his solos speak (very similar to Bill Steer).
•Mille Petrozza (Kreator)
The riffs off of Extreme Aggressions are amazing. Just the way he manages to pull them off and sing is wicked. I just love this guy.
Tons More Really, Vai, Schuldiner, ect I just picked these because they were my favourites and where I get the most inspiration for my playing.
My favorite players
1. Allen West (makes me want to grab the nearest bong)
2. Charlie Benante (great riffs, however John Bush should be your singer)
3. Jon Christ (great tone)
4. Trey Azagtoth
5. Ishahn (i just dig the atmosphere)
